In Search of Goldilocks

There are a lot of changes going on in the poker blogisphere lately. Change100 is flying solo on the apartment front. Otis is flying the family to Toronto. Al Can’t Hang is flying under the blog radar screen. Dr. Chako happily and sadly flew home. Joe Speaker is circling the airport, thinking about the changes on his domestic front. And F-Train is still flying stealth relative to his pending and still secret change.

Today, while I was following along with the PokerNews coverage of the EPT in Monte Carlo, I was filling out forms. They included a W-4 form, an Employment Eligibility Verification form courtesy of Homeland Security, and a Health Savings Account Application. Friday, I bought enough cat food for the coming weeks. I even thought about going to the grocery store today, just to remind me what shopping on the weekends was like. (Note on picture - Hey if I’m going to be a working girl, I’m definitely picking Cusack over Griffith)

Could it be? It’s hard to believe. I’m about to give up my slacking ways and plug into a 9ish-to-5ish. I’ve been on the two ends of the employment extremes. At IBM, my start time was 8:12 am; they had people show up to work in 6 minute increments to optimize traffic coming and going into the plant. In my most recent self-employed state, start times were almost irrelevant; work was more ebb and flow than start and stop. It’s been suits vs. jammies. It’s been “meetings bloody meetings“ vs the solitude of the laptop abyss. I was beginning to wonder if there was an in between; someplace “just right” for this Goldilocks.
Tomorrow I start a job that involves investment, editing and writing; kind of the triple crown for me. It’s established but still entrepreneurial. It’s both young and old. It’s flexible yet organized. It’s in between. I think it might be just right.
Amy’s job FAQs
Will you continue to write in your blog?
Of course. Otherwise I’d go insane and be worthless to any employer.
Does your new employer know about your blog?
Yes. And they still hired me.
Will you be coming out for seven unbelievable weeks of the WSOP?
I won’t be spending my summer in Las Vegas this year. I have been going out to at least part of the WSOP since 2001, so I might try to sneak out for at least a little time; bellying up to the hooker bar with Pauly, playing a few tournaments with the pokerboyz, and playing the 9-T soooted with Gracie. I’ll know more later.
Will you still write about poker?
Since the first time I played poker, I wrote about it. It’s not something I control. Thankfully PokerNews understands my needs.
Will you always suck at NLHE?
Yes. This will never change.

I love the analogy to the three bears, and from what you’ve told me, this job sounds about as close to the Baby Bear as you might be able to find in the non-fairy tale world.
But I’m gonna miss you at the Series. I want you to commit to at least one long weekend of WSOP craziness. Or a short weekend. Or a Tuesday. But you gotta give us something. I’ll even chip in for air fare, or a life-like mannequin you can use to fake your own death to get out of work (a la Homer Simpson in the episode “Mother Simpson”).

Subtle yet effective announcement Amy, just the right amount of movie references to soften the blow and one impressive line-up of poker writers passing into the middle age of pokerdom.

My own Maynard G. Krebs sold out!!!! Funny how life progresses. As I slip the bonds of a lifetime of employment, you take my place. I guess the universe remains in perfect balance. Best of luck Amy. Promise you will add beauty to the beasts during “Boyz” week this summer.

I sure hope you can make it out for Boyz Week. What would a Boyz week be without our token girl.
I am excited about your new venture. I know you will do well.
