Johnny Bax and Random Pics

Johnny Bax2

One my blogger reads is poker4peace.  There is something I like about viewing poker, and the world, through the eyes of someone who is constantly in motion.  Slimeface is taking a much needed vacation from the road this month, but thankfully he is logging in with good content - and good traffic advice.

We all know that one of the key search phrases for my blog is now “cheerleader crotch shot” - through no fault of my own.  One of the key names that consistently comes up for poker4peace is “Johnny Bax” - the nick of the great Cliff Josephy.  I’ve gotten to see Johnny Bax play on a number of occasions - and of course love Peter Alson’s angst ridden account of Bax’s bracelet win at the 2005 WSOP. So I thought I’d throw a few my pics of Josephy out there - in a completely non-traffic whoring gesture.  These pics are from Aruba in 2005.  Of course I missed Aruba this year - and Johnny Bax’s great second place finish.  [Pop Quiz:  What do Johnny Bax, Shane Schleger and Amy Calistri all have in common?  They were all mentioned more than once in Peter Alson’s book.  And yes, Bax and Shaniac were mentioned for their poker playing ability.  And I was mentioned for my ability to gossip and score free food]

When I went looking for these pics, I found some others that I thought should find a home.

Boston

I’ve mentioned Al Boston (above) a few times - and Boston’s even found his way to post here.  After swearing he wouldn’t play the 2006 WSOP, I caught him in the field one day.  In his defense, he had left the sanctuary of Old Orchard Beach, Maine to help out some Vegas friends.  Once in Vegas’ sweltering summer heat, you might as well sit in a few levels.

Jim Meehan

Minneapolis” Jim Meehan is always a good lens target.

Barry

And while I know people have their issues with CP (and yes, I make fun of their content from time to time), I have never had a personal issue with Barry Shulman.  I’ve never worked for CP - and in fact I’ve probably worked for every one of their competitors.  Yet whenever we meet up in the field, Barry is always pleasant and cordial.  When it was announced that I had taken the Editor’s position at the mothership, Barry was the first one to email me with his congratulations.  That deserves a picture I guess.

If you want to find out what’s on my addled poker mind these days, head over to Calistri’s Corner.

  1. Thanks for the shout! As a novice and huge fan of photography I find these photos fasinating; both the posed and candid shots! Thanks for the tip on Peter Alson’s book.

  2. I have some great shots of Johnny Bax from his bracelet-winning performance at the 2005 WSOP. Unfortunately, they belong to Card Player.

Speaking of CP, I *have* worked for them, and I have the same view that you do. I’ve ragged on Card Player from time to time since I left, but Barry Shulman has always had my respect. He sometimes gets a bad rep that he doesn’t deserve.
