Not High Enough for Harrah’s

L’Shana Tova. Everywhere, except in a small pocket of London, Jews are preparing for Rosh Hashanah. The High Holiday, signifying the New Year, is a day (well technically two days) of judgment and remembrance. But for Jews playing in Harrah’s World Series of Poker in Europe, these holiest of days are just two more days of paying juice and grinding it out for one of the, now, 58 WSOP bracelets up for grabs in 2007.
I don’t know why Harrah’s chose to schedule the WSOPE during Rosh Hashanah. I guess they figured people would come anyway. It’s not like they’d schedule one on Christmas, although if it were a big enough tournament few poker players would miss it. But even if they thought they’d get the draw on Christmas, Harrah’s wouldn’t risk the public relations nightmare of juicing poker players while separating them from their families on a religious holiday. Or maybe they would. Stay tuned to see how you can freeroll into the WSOPBOC (Birth of Christ).

In other news, I left the house twice in the last two weeks - and neither time was I on my way to the airport. I had lunch at Doc’s MotorWorks one day with some friends where we chewed on their great onion rings and politics. And last week I met up with an artist from NostalgiaArt to talk about possible cover art for the Matusow book. I know that it’s a little early for cover talk, but when I realized the NostalgiaArt and I were practically neighbors, I jumped at the chance of a hook-up. Among the artists they represent, I was interested in Darci Faulkner because of a picture of hers that I had seen (above). While Darci couldn’t make it (she doesn’t live here), Dennis brought me a limited edition print of the picture I liked. Sweeeet. He must have known how much I like free stuff. (It’s already hanging over my desk) It turns out Dennis is also a poker player and gave me an update on some of the games around town. Not a bad little outing for the price of a latte.

I checked out the NostalgiaArt site - I loved the ladies picture, very cool.
Can’t wait for the matusow book…

Ami - You, Otis, Pauly and Change100 remark about sleep. There have been studies, published, that link the inability to sleep to, of all things, computers.
It seems those that habitually use, and for durations, computers until bed time do have trouble: 1) falling asleep and 2) sleeping for normal periods. They also do not get restful sleep.
Much, from the descriptions I’ve read, on the order of alcohol induced sleep problems.
The solution seems to be to seperate ones self from the computer screen two to two and a half hours prior to the sleep attempt.
Source: Sci American articles and other related Google efforts.
If it helps, I had the same problem and the “cooling off” period did help.
